A direct counter-offensive from Shimla — Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has pushed back sharply against allegations questioning his wealth, calling the campaign a deliberate attempt to damage his reputation ahead of what remains a fiercely contested political landscape in the hill state.

In a post on Wednesday, 29 July 2026, Sukhu stated: 'सम्पत्ति की बात इसलिए लाई गई है ताकि मेरी छवि को धूमिल किया जा सके' — ('The property issue has been raised only to tarnish my image'). He added that he has disclosed his complete asset details in a statutory affidavit and has been doing so for over 20 years.

The Affidavit Argument: 20 Years of Disclosure

Sukhu's defence rests on a well-established legal pillar. The Election Commission of India, backed by Supreme Court directives since 2003, mandates that every candidate contesting elections file a sworn affidavit disclosing assets and liabilities. Sukhu says he has complied with this requirement through every electoral cycle for two decades — making the sudden public scrutiny, in his view, politically motivated rather than procedurally grounded.

He acknowledged that a plot he purchased years ago has appreciated in value over time — a routine outcome of real-estate ownership — and argued that citing this natural appreciation to brand him 'the wealthiest leader in north India' is a misrepresentation. 'This seems like a political manoeuvre to me,' he said.
