Kochi, March 7 (NationPress) On International Women’s Day, the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) will honor two extraordinary women entrepreneurs -- M.A. Akhilamol and Sangeetha Sunil, for their remarkable accomplishments in the fisheries industry.
This recognition celebrates their tenacity and entrepreneurial spirit, which enabled them to overcome obstacles.
The award ceremony will take place at the CMFRI headquarters on Monday as part of the Women’s Day festivities.
Both Akhilamol and Sangeetha are recipients of the CMFRI’s Science Technology and Innovation (STI) Hub project, an initiative sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi.
This program emphasizes training, capacity building, and gender mainstreaming in fisheries, equipping entrepreneurs with advanced skills and resources to innovate and prosper.
Akhilamol, hailing from Kodungallur, embarked on fish farming to finance her children’s education. After engaging in CMFRI’s training sessions, she transitioned into aquaculture, ultimately founding a consultancy service, Ponnoos Aqua Clinic, to assist others in the industry.
She now runs a successful one-acre integrated fish farming unit near Kodungallur, cultivating sea bass, pearl spot, and mullet, in addition to poultry farming, vegetable cultivation, and floriculture. Her latest endeavor includes cage farming in the Kodungallur backwaters.
On the other hand, Sangeetha, a resident of Nayaramabalam in Ernakulam district, has made a mark in fish value addition. Under her brand ‘Salt N Spicy’, she specializes in a variety of value-added products, including fish pickles, cutlets, chutney powder, and dry prawns.
Her emphasis on indigenous seafood varieties has received considerable acclaim, evident from the enthusiastic response to her stall at the recent CMFRI fish festival. She also regularly supplies to CMFRI’s Agricultural Technology Information Centre (ATIC) sales counter.
The inspiring journeys of these entrepreneurs highlight the transformative influence of the STI Hub project and demonstrate how innovation and resolve can lead to significant advancements in the fisheries sector.
