Kochi, Aug 7 (NationPress) As the prices of coconut and coconut oil reach unprecedented levels in Kerala on the eve of Onam, a curious incident of theft from a local grocery store has captured the public's interest.
A shop in Aluva, located approximately 30 km from Kochi, fell victim to a theft where an unidentified suspect made away with 30 bottles of coconut oil and other items following an initial unsuccessful break-in attempt involving drilling through the shop’s floor, according to a local media report from Thursday.
The cost for one kilogram of coconut varies between Rs 80 and Rs 100, while coconut oil is priced at Rs 500 to Rs 600 per kg across the state.
Both coconut and coconut oil are essential to the daily lives of people in Kerala, but their soaring prices have strained family budgets, particularly with the Onam festival nearing.
The incident occurred at a fruit and vegetable shop near the Thottumugham bridge in Aluva. The store owner, Ayoob, discovered the break-in on Wednesday morning.
Upon contacting the Aluva East police, who oversee the area, it was revealed that they were aware of the situation but had yet to receive an official complaint to initiate an investigation.
According to local reports, the perpetrator initially attempted to drill into the shop's concrete floor to gain entry, but this tactic failed.
Undeterred, the suspect then broke the main lock to access the store. Once inside, it appeared that the primary objective was to steal coconut oil.
The thief reportedly packed 30 bottles of premium coconut oil, each worth around Rs 600, into a sack, along with a box of apples and ten packets of milk.
Before fleeing, the suspect allegedly tried to eliminate evidence by severing the cables of the CCTV cameras installed in the shop.
The skyrocketing prices of coconuts and coconut oil have become a significant political topic in the state, prompting the government to announce a subsidized pricing scheme through ration shops for the Onam festivities.
This incident marks the latest in a series of similar thefts across the state, which are believed to be directly linked to the escalating prices of coconuts and coconut oil.
