Chennai, Sep 16 (NationPress) The Coimbatore Corporation in Tamil Nadu is set to launch a rooftop garden at its main office located in Town Hall. This initiative is a part of a comprehensive plan aimed at increasing the green cover in the city and addressing the challenges posed by urban heat islands.

This garden will act as a pioneering project, showcasing how urban infrastructure can aid in the growth of green canopies.

As part of the civic body’s goal to plant one lakh saplings this year, approximately 46,519 saplings have already been planted. The corporation is intensifying efforts to achieve the remaining target by the end of the financial year.

Plantation efforts are focused on designated heat islands, where temperatures are higher due to dense urbanization and geography. The north zone, which experiences more heat than central areas, is prioritized for additional plantation activities.

To encourage community involvement, the corporation is organizing a rooftop gardening expo next week. This exhibition will provide guidance on selecting plant varieties that are suitable for residential terraces, ways to care for them effectively, and the appropriate types of manure to use.

Additionally, attendees will receive information on sourcing materials and accessories to inspire households to enhance the city’s greenery.

As part of ongoing beautification efforts, medians on major roads, including Pollachi Road, are being developed with vibrant flowering plants. Flyover medians throughout the city have already been partially landscaped, with plans to complete the remaining areas in the upcoming weeks.

Along the banks of the Noyyal River, 23,145 palm saplings have been planted, all of which are thriving. In total, over 70,000 saplings, including palms, have been introduced into the city through various initiatives by the corporation. Furthermore, a 45-acre Miyawaki forest has been established on reclaimed land at the Vellalore dumpyard.

This forest is sustained using treated wastewater, presenting a sustainable model for future green projects.

Through these initiatives, the Coimbatore Corporation aims to strengthen the city’s natural ecosystem while enhancing urban livability and setting a benchmark for community-driven environmental progress.
