Coimbatore, Nov 25 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M.K. Stalin, officially opened the highly anticipated Semmozhi Poonga in Coimbatore on Tuesday, signaling the realization of one of the city's most ambitious urban greening initiatives.
Spanning 45 acres, this botanical park has been established on the former grounds of the Central Prison in Gandhipuram, transforming them into a premier recreational and ecological area. With an investment of Rs 208.5 crore, Semmozhi Poonga offers over two kilometers of walking paths, 23 uniquely themed gardens, and a digital plant information system that lets visitors learn about various species via QR codes.
According to officials, this project is in line with the city’s goal to enhance green tourism while providing residents with a world-class open space. The park is home to more than 2,000 plant species, including extensive collections of bonsai, indigenous plants, and carefully curated garden clusters. The modern amenities include co-working spaces, an all-access gym, a terrarium, rainwater harvesting systems, dedicated children’s activity areas, and pathways designed to be accessible for individuals with disabilities.
The concept for Semmozhi Poonga was initially introduced during the World Tamil Literature Conference in Coimbatore back in 2010 by the then Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi. The project faced delays for several years until it was revitalized under the current administration. Stalin laid the foundation stone in December 2023, signaling a renewed commitment to expanding urban green infrastructure throughout Tamil Nadu.
Following the unveiling of the park’s identity plaque, the Chief Minister explored key features, including an artistic representation of Kadai Ezhu Vallalgal, the seven legendary patrons of the Sangam era. He also engaged with local industrialists, civic groups, and community representatives at the 500-seat amphitheater on site, which is expected to serve as a cultural nucleus for public programs and community events.
During his visit to Coimbatore, Stalin also inaugurated a housing initiative for individuals with disabilities in Orattukuppai, located in the Chettipalayam panchayat. This project, spanning 3.98 acres and supported by CSR from G.D. Naidu Charities, is a Rs 5.67 crore venture that includes 86 compact homes, each measuring 319 sq ft. Each dwelling is equipped with a hall, kitchen, bathroom, toilet, and accessibility features such as ramps, sliding doors, and fixtures designed for those with disabilities. Keys were distributed to beneficiaries during the ceremony.
This event marked Stalin's 16th official visit to Coimbatore since he assumed office in 2021, highlighting the administration's ongoing commitment to infrastructure and civic development in western Tamil Nadu.
