Did Congress MP Raise Concerns Over India-US Trade Deal in Lok Sabha?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 4 (NationPress) Congress MP Manish Tewari filed an adjournment motion notice in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, calling for a discussion regarding the India-US trade agreement.
The trade deal between India and the US was finalized on Monday (February 2) after a conversation between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump.
In his motion, Tewari stated, "I propose that this House suspends Question Hour, Zero Hour, and all other scheduled business to discuss a matter of urgent public concern: the statement from the President of the United States claiming that the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India has consented to (i) halt purchases of Russian oil, (ii) significantly boost oil imports from the United States and Venezuela, (iii) lower Indian tariffs and non-tariff barriers to zero, and (iv) pledge to acquire over $500 billion worth of American goods."
The Congress MP emphasized that if these commitments are accurate, they could have serious ramifications for India's energy security, price stability, and autonomy in foreign policy.
He pointed out, "Russian crude has played a crucial role in stabilizing fuel inflation, and any sudden change might burden both citizens and industries. Significant trade concessions could adversely impact domestic manufacturing, farmers, and MSMEs."
Tewari called on the government to deliver an "immediate statement and facilitate a thorough discussion to prevent the nation from facing decisions made without transparency in trade, energy, and foreign policy matters."
Under the terms of the trade agreement, US tariffs on Indian goods were reduced to 18 percent, while India agreed to relax certain trade barriers concerning American products.
The trade agreement has faced backlash from opposition parties, which argue that the deal disproportionately benefits the US and is not aligned with India's interests.
Earlier on Tuesday, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, accused Prime Minister Modi of being "compromised" and "under pressure," suggesting this was the reason for the signing of the India-US trade agreement.
