New Delhi, Feb 5 (NationPress) Congress MP Manish Tewari has once again presented an adjournment motion notice in the Lok Sabha to engage in a discussion regarding the newly announced India-US trade deal.
Tewari called upon the House to pause the Question Hour, Zero Hour, and all other scheduled business to address what he termed an urgent matter of significant public concern—the India-US trade agreement.
In his notice, he referred to a statement allegedly made by the President of the United States, asserting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi consented to cease purchases of Russian oil, significantly boost oil imports from the US and Venezuela, eliminate Indian tariffs and non-tariff barriers entirely, and commit to acquiring over $500 billion worth of American products.
"I hereby notify my intention to seek permission to propose a motion for the adjournment of the House's business to discuss a matter of urgent importance. Specifically, I request that this House suspends the Question Hour, Zero Hour, and all other business of the day to address a pressing issue of significant public concern, namely the reported statement by the President of the United States claiming that the Government of India has agreed to (i) halt the purchase of Russian oil, (ii) greatly escalate oil imports from the United States and Venezuela, (iii) eliminate Indian tariffs and non-tariff barriers altogether, and (iv) commit to acquiring over $500 billion in American goods," he added.
The Congress MP cautioned that if such commitments were indeed made, they could have dire consequences for India’s energy security, price stability, and independent foreign policy. He pointed out that Russian crude has been pivotal in controlling fuel inflation in India, and any sudden shift could impose additional burdens on both citizens and industries. He argued that substantial trade concessions might also impact domestic manufacturing, farmers, and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
Tewari urged the government to deliver an immediate statement in Parliament and facilitate a comprehensive discussion to ensure that decisions concerning trade, energy, and foreign policy are made transparently.
Earlier, the Lok Sabha experienced unrest as Opposition MPs protested regarding this matter. The motion was submitted in the wake of the government announcing the trade agreement following a phone conversation between Prime Minister Modi and US President Donald Trump. Under the terms of the deal, US tariffs on Indian goods were reduced to 18 percent, while India consented to relax certain trade barriers on American products.
The trade agreement has faced backlash from Opposition parties, which have characterized the pact as excessively favorable to the US and detrimental to India's interests.
