Congress Leaders Critique Vijayan Government on Kerala's Health Negligence Claims
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kochi, Feb 23 (NationPress) Prominent Congress leaders launched a fierce critique against the government of Kerala, led by Pinarayi Vijayan, over ongoing claims of medical negligence. They dismissed the assertion by state officials that these incidents are merely "isolated cases".
The backlash followed the visit of the Congress General Secretary and Alappuzha Lok Sabha representative to Usha Joseph, a local resident currently receiving treatment at a private facility in Ernakulam. This visit was prompted by the recent removal of a pair of scissors that was purportedly left inside her abdomen during a surgery at Vandanam Medical College Hospital back in 2021.
During a press conference, he criticized the inquiry panels formed in response to medical negligence incidents, stating that they often serve as a means to obscure accountability rather than ensuring it.
"Whenever such cases arise, committees are formed, but no substantial actions result from their findings. If medical negligence goes unpunished, can we consider the victims as the offenders?" he questioned.
Venugopal characterized the inquiry outcomes as "bizarre" and urged the government to recognize its mismanagement while implementing corrective measures instead of attempting to divert criticism by playing the caste and gender card.
"No one is aiming to tarnish the image of government hospitals. However, the systems designed to prevent these failures have utterly collapsed," he stated, emphasizing that Kerala’s healthcare system is plagued by negligence.
He argued that labeling repeated incidents as isolated cases is simply unacceptable.
"The Health Department is in dire need of treatment," he quipped.
Opposition Leader V.D. Satheesan shared similar sentiments, mocking the various Ministers’ claims that the issues in the health sector are merely "isolated episodes".
"If we were to compile the Minister’s inquiry reports, they would fill numerous volumes. We would need a large hall just to store those records," he remarked, targeting Health Minister Veena George, in light of the frequent investigations triggered by adverse occurrences.
Congress officials asserted that persistent oversights cannot be dismissed with standard inquiries, arguing that restoring public trust in the state's healthcare system demands transparency, accountability, and systemic reforms.
