New Delhi, March 10 (NationPress) The Congress party on Monday voiced significant apprehension regarding External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s statement in parliament, labeling it as “uninspired” and insufficient in tackling India's strategic dilemmas in West Asia.

Senior Congress figure Salman Khurshid, representing the party’s Foreign Affairs Department, stated that the External Affairs Minister has not lodged any protest concerning the sinking of the IRIS Dena, an event that undermines India’s status as a net security provider in the Indian Ocean Region.

The party also highlighted that the statement failed to condemn the targeted killing of a sovereign nation's head of state, nor did it propose solutions to alleviate the profound geo-economic and geopolitical ramifications that India is currently facing.

Furthermore, Congress pointed out that the EAM’s address lacked tangible proposals to protect India's strategic investments and trade in commodities like crude oil, basmati rice, urea, and fertilizers, as well as to ensure the safety of the nine million Indians residing in West Asia.

The organization further criticized the absence of a strategic plan to diversify India’s energy security or reaffirm energy independence, which it claims is presently dictated by foreign entities offering merely a 30-day OFAC waiver.

The statement also criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his “misguided endorsement of warfare” during his recent visit, arguing that it has fostered a belief that India is relinquishing its moral leadership within the Global South, particularly in a year when India presides over BRICS.

The Congress party accused the Prime Minister of making India seem complicit in eroding the rules-based international order.

The External Affairs Minister’s remarks were characterized as “void of any acute insights into the significant global shifts occurring” and failed to outline a coherent strategy for India to navigate the current global disruptions or to uphold its values and interests in an increasingly volatile environment.

The party asserted that Prime Minister Modi’s foreign policy “misadventures,” combined with the BJP government’s alleged undermining of the Indian Foreign Service, are leading India towards a state of “vassalage” and restricting the bipartisan strategic and diplomatic gains achieved since independence.

This statement was officially released by the Foreign Affairs Department of the Congress.

Point of View

Congress's critique of the government's West Asia policy raises important questions about India's geopolitical strategy and the effectiveness of its foreign policy leadership. It highlights a need for a more robust approach to safeguard national interests in a volatile region.
