Ahmedabad, Aug 17 (NationPress) Approximately 500 leaders and members from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) officially transitioned to the Congress party at Rajiv Gandhi Bhavan on Sunday.
The ceremony was graced by AICC general secretary and Gujarat in-charge Mukul Wasnik, Gujarat Congress president Amit Chavda, and the Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Dr. Tushar Chaudhary, alongside various senior state leaders.
Notable figures who switched allegiances include Suryasinh Dabhi, AAP's state secretary; Omprakash Tiwari, Ahmedabad city president and state joint secretary; Kantiji Thakor, a former Kalol assembly candidate; Rambhai Yadav, state joint secretary; Rajeshbhai Bhatt, district secretary of Gandhinagar; Narendrasinh Dabhi, district secretary; Natvarsinh Dabhi, ward president; Pravinbhai Sasla, Ahmedabad city secretary; and Ashokbhai Yadav, legal chairman of AAP in Ahmedabad city.
Welcoming the new members, Mukul Wasnik emphasized that the Congress ideology aims to bring everyone together, contrasting it with the BJP's “divisive politics.” He accused the ruling party of exacerbating economic inequality, unemployment, and inflation, stating that it has been “making the poor poorer and the rich richer.”
Amit Chavda highlighted the growing disillusionment among the people of Gujarat with the BJP's anti-people policies, escalating costs in education and healthcare, and a lack of job opportunities.
“To preserve democracy and safeguard the Constitution, it is imperative that we unite against the BJP’s divisive agenda,” he stated. Dr. Tushar Chaudhary remarked that Congress upholds democracy, not autocracy.
In a critique of the BJP regarding rising prices, unemployment, and frequent infrastructure failures, he noted, “Bridges may collapse, but BJP offices remain intact.” He likened the integration of new leaders to “sugar blending into milk, enriching and sweetening” the party.
Several prominent AAP leaders, including state secretaries and city office-bearers, announced their departure from the party after realizing it primarily served to “divide votes against Congress and indirectly aid the BJP.”
They committed to propagating the Congress ideology at the grassroots level and confronting what they termed the BJP’s “dictatorial regime.”
The event also saw the attendance of senior Congress figures, including AICC secretary Anand Chaudhary, Ahmedabad city Congress president Sonalben Patel, former city president Himmatsinh Patel, and media coordinator Hemang Raval.
