Bhopal, Feb 7 (NationPress) In light of the nationwide controversy surrounding the deportation of over 100 illegal Indian immigrants from the US, the opposition Congress organized a protest on Friday.
Numerous Congress members, led by state unit chief Jitu Patwari, participated in a march while handcuffed, condemning the 'inhumane' actions of the US.
They urged the Central government, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to take decisive action on this matter.
During the protest, Congress representatives criticized PM Modi, asserting that the manner in which Indian citizens were deported was unacceptable.
"Indian nationals were treated like terrorists, which is an insult to the entire nation. While our Prime Minister claims that India is on the path to becoming a global leader and enhancing the country’s prestige, the treatment of our nationals by the US contradicts all the BJP government's assertions," stated Jitu Patwari.
The Madhya Pradesh Congress chapter conducted the protest just a day after the party's central leadership, along with other opposition figures, raised the issue in the Parliament on Thursday.
Numerous opposition leaders have criticized the Centre regarding the deportation process, primarily questioning the treatment of Indian citizens.
Importantly, a US military aircraft carrying the deported Indian nationals landed in Punjab's Amritsar on Wednesday.
In response to the uproar from the opposition, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar addressed the Parliament on Thursday, confirming that the Centre would engage with the US government to ensure that the deportees are treated with respect during their return.
He mentioned that since 2009, a total of 15,756 illegal Indian immigrants have been deported from the US to India.
Furthermore, he clarified that the deportation of illegal migrants is not a recent occurrence, and the application of restraints on deportees is considered a 'standard operating procedure'.
