New Delhi, March 10 (NationPress) The Delhi Police apprehended Himanshu Gupta, the primary contractor engaged by the Delhi Jal Board, in relation to the tragic Janakpuri pit death case after an extensive manhunt. A team from the Anti-Auto Theft Squad (AATS) of the West District located Gupta in Udaipur, Rajasthan, where he had been evading capture. Authorities have stated that he is being transported back to Delhi for further inquiries.

This arrest follows the ongoing investigation into the death of 25-year-old Kamal Dhyani, who fell into an unsecured excavation pit belonging to the Delhi Jal Board along with his motorcycle in Janakpuri, West Delhi, earlier this year.

On February 28, a local court denied bail to labourer Yogesh, a suspect in the case. The court noted that instead of attempting to rescue Dhyani, the accused tried to conceal the scene of the incident.

Judicial Magistrate First Class Harjot Singh Aujla of the Dwarka Courts highlighted that Yogesh opted to notify his employer about the occurrence prior to making any rescue attempts, suggesting a deliberate effort to hide the truth rather than genuine helplessness.

The court expressed concern not only about the presence of the open pit but also about the accused's actions after seeing Dhyani's body inside. “Initial evidence suggests that rather than alerting others, seeking assistance, or making any real attempt to save the victim, the applicant prioritized informing his employer and later tried to obscure the site,” the court stated.

According to investigators, Dhyani fell into the 4.5-foot-deep pit around 12:15 A.M. on February 6 while returning home from a call center in Rohini. Authorities indicated that he remained trapped in the pit for nearly eight hours, despite at least six witnesses being aware of the situation yet failing to alert the authorities.

Both sub-contractor Rajesh Kumar Prajapati and labourer Yogesh were previously arrested for allegedly neglecting to assist in recovering Dhyani's body despite being aware of the incident. Investigators mentioned that Yogesh informed Prajapati, after which the two tried to cover up their negligence by not placing barricades around the excavation site.

Further inquiries revealed that Himanshu Gupta and Kavish Gupta, directors of the company contracted by the Delhi Jal Board, were notified about the incident about an hour later by Prajapati. However, they reportedly chose to ignore the information and fled the scene.

The anticipatory bail requests of the Gupta brothers had previously been rejected by both the trial court and the Delhi High Court. Ongoing investigations in the case are still in progress.

Point of View

This incident underscores the urgent need for accountability in public safety measures. The tragic death of Kamal Dhyani highlights systemic failures that must be addressed to prevent future occurrences. The ongoing investigations should serve as a wake-up call for authorities to prioritize safety protocols.
