New Delhi, Feb 7 (NationPress) The grieving father of 25-year-old biker Kamal Dhyani, who tragically lost his life after plunging into an open pit by the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) in Janakpuri, voiced his anger towards the Delhi government for the lack of accountability. He insisted that such hazardous pits must be eliminated in the future.

In an interview with IANS, Naresh Dhyani stated, “We are deeply dissatisfied with the government. They may implement temporary fixes, but the same issues keep arising. A few days go by, and nothing changes. Absolutely nothing was done. While what has happened is irreversible, we demand that such pits should not exist in the future, and the government has to be held accountable.”

He shared the harrowing experience of searching for Kamal with family and friends overnight, only to discover the heartbreaking truth in the morning.

“We, his friends, went out looking for him in the park and surrounding areas. It was only in the morning that we learned he had fallen into the pit with his bike in the darkness. We want to ensure that such incidents do not recur and that the Delhi government accepts responsibility,” he emphasized.

Naresh, who identified Kamal as his eldest son and the family's only provider, said, “He was the sole breadwinner, and my younger son is currently unemployed.”

Kamal’s brother recounted the distressing search for his sibling, saying he searched tirelessly through the night.

“When I called my brother in the morning, the police informed us that a body and a bike were discovered in an open pit. Upon arriving at the scene, I found his bag and realized my brother had passed away,” he recounted, his voice filled with sorrow.

He also noted that the family had yet to receive any assurance from political figures or officials. “We haven't been updated at all. No one has come to speak with us—no leaders, nothing,” he added.

Local residents have also raised alarms about the safety deficiencies at the site where Kamal lost his life, after falling into the DJB’s open pit.

One resident expressed, “Our home is just across in Janta Flats. We need to pass here multiple times daily. There were no barricades on this side, only two on the opposite side. The green sheet wasn’t there previously. Nothing was properly set up. There were no warnings for anyone. The area is poorly lit, which poses the greatest risk.”

The incident took place late Thursday night when Kamal fell into the open pit at a DJB project site while heading home from work. Kamal, a Kailashpuri resident, had left his job in Rohini to celebrate his parents’ wedding anniversary, but he never returned to his family.

A friend of Kamal mentioned that he had spoken to him shortly before the tragedy, stating he was just 15 minutes away from home.

When Kamal didn't arrive, his family conducted a frantic search overnight alongside police teams. Despite attempts to trace his location using mobile tower data and CCTV footage, no leads were found for several hours.

The tragic discovery was made around 8 am Friday when a woman alerted the police about a body in a pit in the vicinity.

Authorities quickly responded and found Kamal’s body in a nearly 15-foot-deep pit, with his motorcycle overturned nearby.

Residents have accused the Delhi government’s DJB of gross negligence at the project site, claiming the pit was left uncovered, poorly barricaded, and unmarked, endangering commuters, especially at night.

Locals also pointed out the lack of adequate lighting, stating that the darkness makes it challenging for riders to detect road hazards.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Police dismissed allegations of inaction, asserting that officers were present with the family throughout the night, making continued efforts to locate Kamal.

This incident has sparked significant outrage and raised serious concerns regarding safety standards at construction sites across the city.

In response, Delhi PWD Minister Parvesh Verma described the tragedy as “devastating” and announced forthcoming strict measures. He indicated that suspensions would be enforced and a thorough investigation launched to determine responsibility.
