Delhi Assembly Polls Scheduled: Voting on February 5 and Counting on February 8

New Delhi, January 7 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) has revealed the timeline for the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections. The elections in the national capital will take place in a single phase on February 5, followed by counting on February 8.

The term of the 70-member Assembly concludes on February 23, necessitating elections to form a new governing body prior to that date. Historically, the national capital has conducted Assembly elections in a single phase.

This election cycle in Delhi will feature a three-way contest among the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and the opposition parties BJP and Congress.

The AAP is striving to secure victory for the third consecutive term, having previously won 62 out of 70 seats in the last Assembly elections, with the remaining seats taken by the BJP.

Despite facing challenges due to the arrest of several leaders, including former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, in corruption scandals, the AAP is making efforts to engage Delhi voters with various promises. From utilizing religious sentiments to offering targeted welfare schemes for women and senior citizens, the AAP aims to reinforce its support base for another term.

Conversely, the BJP is emphasizing the corruption allegations against the AAP and its leader, Arvind Kejriwal. The BJP is keen on penetrating the AAP's support base to secure enough seats to form the government. Having been out of power in Delhi since 1998, the BJP is eager to break this long-standing drought.

The Congress party is also focused on regaining influence in the national capital. After facing voter rejection in the last two Assembly elections, the Congress is determined to make a mark in the upcoming polls. The party is specifically targeting female voters through its ‘Pyari Didi Yojana’, which promises Rs 2,500 financial support to eligible women.

In the Delhi Assembly, the magic number to form a government is 36.

The ECI has published an updated voter list for Delhi. The latest data indicates a considerable increase in the voter base over the last two months. As of October 2024, the total number of voters was 1,53,57,529. Following a summary revision, this figure has surged to 1,55,24,858, reflecting an addition of 1,67,329 new voters by December 2024.
