ECI to Reveal Schedule for Delhi Assembly Elections Today

New Delhi, Jan 7 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) is ready to unveil the election timetable for the 70-member Delhi Assembly on Tuesday.

The ECI, in a media invitation, stated, "Press Conference by Election Commission of India to announce the schedule for General Election to Legislative Assembly of NCT of Delhi at 2 pm."

The press briefing is scheduled to take place in the Plenary Hall of Vigyan Bhawan in the national capital.

The current term of the Delhi Assembly concludes on February 23, necessitating the completion of the entire electoral process prior to that date.

On Monday, the ECI published a newly updated voter registry for Delhi. The latest data indicates that Delhi's voter pool has notably expanded over the last two months. In October 2024, the total number of voters was recorded at 1,53,57,529. However, following a summary revision, this number has increased to 1,55,24,858, reflecting an addition of 1,67,329 new voters by December 2024. The Commission has warned against the submission of false and fabricated documents for obtaining new voter ID.

The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has nominated candidates for all 70 constituencies. The party was the first to announce candidates for every seat. Party leader and former Delhi CM, Arvind Kejriwal, is contesting from the New Delhi seat, while Chief Minister Atishi is running for the Kalkaji seat.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has published its initial list of 29 candidates for the forthcoming Assembly elections, including former AAP ministers Kailash Gahlot from Bijwasan and Raj Kumar Anand from Patel Nagar, alongside former Delhi Congress chief Arvind Singh Lovely from Gandhi Nagar. The party has also nominated Pravesh Sahib Singh Verma, the son of former Chief Minister Sahib Singh Verma, for the New Delhi seat contested by AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal. Additionally, former South Delhi MP Ramesh Bidhuri will challenge Chief Minister Atishi in Kalkaji.

The Congress has declared 48 candidates, with more lists expected soon. Sandeep Dikshit, son of former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, will seek election from the New Delhi constituency. Dikshit, who has served two terms in Parliament, will face Arvind Kejriwal, who previously defeated Sheila Dikshit in this area in 2013 and 2015. The Congress has also announced Alka Lamba as their candidate for Kalkaji.
