Delhi-NCR Enveloped in Smog; AQI Stays in the 'Severe' Zone

New Delhi, Dec 18 (NationPress) The region of Delhi-NCR was shrouded in a dense layer of smog on Wednesday, with air quality remaining in the 'severe' category for the third consecutive day as cold weather tightened its grip on the area.
As per the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the overall Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi was noted at 442 at 7:15 A.M., with numerous areas within the national capital marking levels between 400 and 500.
Visibility throughout the region was drastically diminished, prompting the implementation of low-visibility protocols at Delhi airport after visibility fell to just 300 meters.
Major areas in Delhi reported concerning AQI figures, such as Anand Vihar (481), Ashok Vihar (461), Burari Crossing (483), and Nehru Nagar (480). Other notable locales like Alipur, Jahangirpuri, and Mundka recorded AQI values of 443, 469, and 473, respectively.
Surrounding regions within the NCR also suffered from poor air quality, with AQI levels in Haryana's Faridabad at 263, Gurugram at 392, and Uttar Pradesh's Ghaziabad at 390, Greater Noida at 330, and Noida at 364.
The severe air pollution coincided with chilly weather patterns, as Delhi-NCR faced fluctuating humidity ranging from 100 per cent to 66 per cent.
The minimum temperature in some areas was noted to be above 5 degrees Celsius. The combination of calm winds and elevated humidity levels resulted in shallow fog in various parts of the city, further exacerbating pollution levels.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings indicating that these smoggy conditions may continue in the upcoming days, potentially intensifying the cold wave. Early mornings are anticipated to experience decreased visibility and colder temperatures.
This scenario highlights the urgent need for effective pollution control measures as residents face hazardous air quality and associated health risks.
The CPCB categorizes an AQI over 400 as 'severe', indicating significant health risks for all residents. Authorities have called for strict enforcement of anti-pollution regulations and have advised residents, especially those in vulnerable groups, to limit outdoor activities.
As winter deepens and pollution levels escalate, Delhi-NCR's struggle with smog remains a critical issue.
