New Delhi, April 16 (NationPress) In an extraordinary operation, the Delhi Police successfully located and rescued a stolen newborn baby within hours of the incident, as confirmed by an official on Wednesday. The one-day-old infant was taken from the Safdarjung Hospital in the city on Tuesday.

The baby has been reunited with their family, and a woman suspected of the crime has been arrested. The abduction occurred in broad daylight, causing panic among the parents and hospital staff.

However, a quick response from the Safdarjung Enclave police station led to the case being solved within hours of the incident. A 27-year-old woman, identified as Pooja, who resides in Malviya Nagar, was taken into custody.

On Tuesday, the distressed parents, originally from Basti in Uttar Pradesh but currently living in Chanakyapuri’s Yashwant Place, reported the theft of their newborn baby girl via a PCR call.

Shyam Narayan, the baby's father, informed the police that his wife had given birth to a girl on April 14 at Safdarjung Hospital. After delivery, she was moved to Ward No. 5. The following day, around 3.15 p.m., their newborn child went missing. They searched the area but could not find her, leading them to make the PCR call.

A police team, including sub-inspector Sunil Gaur, Satyender Gulia, and Surender Das, along with Assistant Sub-inspector Jai Prakash and Head constables Anil, Pushpender, Rajender, Harchand, Pramod, Sunil, Shakti, and Dharam Raj, was assembled under the guidance of ACP Ranbir Singh. They sprang into action and apprehended the abductor in less than four hours.

Upon reviewing the CCTV footage from Safdarjung Hospital, they spotted a woman of average build and short stature interacting with other female patients on the same floor. Her face was partially obscured by a stole or dupatta. Further analysis of the footage revealed that the accused boarded the Metro train from AIIMS Metro Station and took the infant with her.

She was traced to Gulak Wali Gali in Malviya Nagar, where the newborn was recovered.

The police stated that the woman switched metro trains multiple times to mislead law enforcement and evade detection via CCTV cameras, but the police team was successful in locating her.

During interrogation, Pooja admitted that she had deceived her husband, Pinku, by pretending to be pregnant and got herself admitted to Safdarjung Hospital.

On April 15, she returned home with the infant, claiming her as her own child. Pooja has been married for seven years.

“Since she had no children of her own, she decided to kidnap a baby from Safdarjung Hospital,” she reportedly told the police.
