Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday, 19 May credited the Centre's infrastructure drive for transforming the capital's road network, highlighting that the total value of completed, ongoing, and upcoming road projects in the Delhi-NCR region has reached nearly ₹1.60 lakh crore. The announcement came after a press briefing by Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, who outlined a sweeping pipeline of expressways, tunnels, and elevated corridors aimed at easing chronic traffic congestion and reducing pollution.

Scale of the Infrastructure Push

Chief Minister Gupta noted that projects worth ₹1.31 lakh crore had already been sanctioned for Delhi-NCR over the past 12 years. The cumulative figure of ₹1.60 lakh crore, as stated by Minister Gadkari, accounts for all stages — completed, under construction, and planned. Gupta described the initiative as part of the Centre's vision, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to build a modern, world-class, and future-ready infrastructure network for the capital.

Key Projects Announced

Minister Gadkari unveiled several major upcoming projects during the briefing. These include a ₹3,500 crore six-lane link connecting UER-II with the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, a ₹7,500 crore Noida-Faridabad high-speed corridor, a ₹7,000 crore tunnel from Shiv Murti to Nelson Mandela Marg, and a ₹5,000 crore elevated corridor from AIIMS to Mahipalpur-Gurugram. The Delhi-Amritsar-Katra connectivity project was also part of the announcement.

Delhi-Mumbai Expressway Link: A Flagship Corridor

Chief Minister Gupta made a special mention of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway link project, calling it a historic gift for the capital. She said the corridor would ensure seamless connectivity between Delhi, Noida, Faridabad, Gurugram, and Jewar Airport. Gupta added that her own inspection of the corridor left a strong impression of its scale and execution quality.

Other Connectivity Projects in the Pipeline

Among the additional projects highlighted were the Kalindi Kunj interchange and flyover, the Ashram-Badarpur six-lane corridor, signal-free connectivity from the Haryana-Delhi border to Punjabi Bagh, and a six-lane corridor from Mehrauli to the Delhi-Haryana border. According to Gupta, these projects will significantly reduce traffic pressure while strengthening regional connectivity across the NCR.

Environment Angle: Waste to Roads

Gupta also highlighted an environmental dimension of the drive, stating that lakhs of tonnes of waste and inert material extracted from Delhi's garbage mountains are now being used in road and highway construction. She argued that the Centre is not only building roads but also contributing meaningfully to Delhi's environmental improvement — a claim that comes as the capital continues to grapple with air quality concerns.

With several projects at various stages of execution, the coming months will test whether the ambitious ₹1.60 lakh crore pipeline translates into measurable relief for Delhi's commuters.
