Did Digvijaya Singh’s Praise for RSS-BJP Expose Congress's Internal Issues?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Dec 29 (NationPress) Congress MP Digvijaya Singh has stirred controversy with his complimentary remarks regarding the BJP and RSS, receiving backing from fellow party member Udit Raj. Raj candidly acknowledged that the historic party is facing significant organizational challenges and rampant factionalism. His support followed Singh's provocative tweet that featured a 1996 image of Prime Minister Narendra Modi alongside senior BJP leader L.K. Advani. In his post, Singh praised the BJP and RSS for their role in developing grassroots leaders, hinting at PM Modi's ascent to power.
In response to the ensuing uproar, Udit Raj stated to IANS, "There is certainly an organizational weakness. Is there any doubt about that? For a decade, we have struggled to appoint district presidents, often blocked by internal factions. Factionalism is widespread." He contrasted this with the BJP, asserting that introspection and internal discussions are integral to Congress culture.
"Discussion is part of our tradition; we do not operate a dictatorship like the BJP. It is in our nature to reflect. If we did not have organizational weaknesses, why would we continue to lose elections? The encouraging aspect is that we are striving to address our flaws. There is nothing wrong with that," he added.
On December 27, Singh took to X, tagging members of the Gandhi family and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, to share the image that ignited the debate. He remarked, "I discovered this impactful photo on Quora. It exemplifies how the grassroots workers of RSS and Jan Sangh @BJP4India humbly serve their leaders and ascend to roles like Chief Minister and Prime Minister. This is the strength of the organization. Jai Siya Ram." The post swiftly went viral, coinciding with a Congress Working Committee meeting in Delhi, prompting speculation that Singh was signaling to the party's leadership.
Later, Singh sought to clarify his statement, asserting that his words had been misconstrued. "I support the organization but oppose the RSS and Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi. I merely acknowledged the organizational strength of the RSS. I have consistently opposed BJP and RSS policies," he informed reporters.
In a separate statement, Udit Raj sharply criticized the Supreme Court's handling of the suspended life sentence for expelled BJP leader Kuldeep Singh Sengar in the Unnao rape case, pointing out how influential figures are often protected despite severe crimes, emphasizing the need for justice for the victim.
Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Raj remarked that public pressure and outrage on social media have been pivotal in compelling governmental action.
