Rajasthan Congress chief Dotasra slams BJP over UCC hearings, cites governance failures
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee President Govind Singh Dotasra on Tuesday, 8 July launched a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led state government over its proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) consultation process, alleging it is designed to advance a BJP-RSS agenda and deflect attention from persistent governance failures rather than genuinely seek public opinion.
Dotasra addressed reporters at the Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee's State War Room in Jaipur, where he questioned why the government had initiated public hearings on the UCC without first releasing a draft or defining the scope of the exercise.
The UCC Consultation Controversy
'The state government has neither prepared a draft nor clarified the framework of these hearings. The exercise is aimed at creating social divisions instead of addressing the real issues affecting the people of Rajasthan,' Dotasra alleged.
He further claimed the committee constituted to examine the UCC was dominated by individuals associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and questioned the appointment of retired Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai to head similar panels across multiple states simultaneously. 'If one person was to oversee this exercise across states, the Centre should have undertaken it nationally instead of weakening the federal structure,' he said.
Governance Failures Cited by Congress
Dotasra asked why the state government was not conducting comparable public consultations on pressing civic issues — including drinking water shortages, power supply disruptions, rising crime, deteriorating roads, farmers' concerns, healthcare failures, unemployment, and inflation.
'Why is there no public consultation on the everyday problems of citizens? People are struggling with water scarcity, crime, poor roads, inadequate healthcare and a lack of employment opportunities. Women are dying of kidney failures in government hospitals post deliveries, but the government wants to debate issues that polarise society,' the Congress leader said.
He also alleged that Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma was spending more time in Delhi than addressing Rajasthan's problems, and criticised the government's performance on agriculture, infrastructure, and public services, claiming the BJP had failed to fulfil its promises to farmers and youth.
Constitutional and Democratic Concerns
Escalating his political attack, Dotasra alleged that the BJP was attempting to weaken democratic institutions and constitutional values. He claimed the party sought a two-thirds parliamentary majority to alter constitutional safeguards, undermine federalism, suppress dissent, and dilute reservations and secularism.
'The BJP is moving the country towards authoritarianism. Its actions are against the spirit of democracy and the Constitution,' he alleged. He also accused the BJP of attempting to destabilise elected governments in various states and misusing constitutional institutions for political gain.
Congress's Stated Position
Dotasra said the Indian National Congress (INC) would strongly oppose what he described as the BJP's 'divisive and anti-constitutional agenda' and pledged to continue raising issues related to governance, public welfare, and democratic rights. This comes amid a broader national debate over the UCC, with several BJP-governed states initiating parallel consultation exercises in recent months.
