Election Commission Revokes Trinamool Candidate's Nomination in West Bengal
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, April 10 (NationPress) - On Friday, the Election Commission of India (ECI) revoked the nomination of Avinabha Bhattacharya, the Trinamool Congress candidate for the Krishnanagar (Uttar) Assembly seat in Nadia district, West Bengal, ahead of the two-phase Assembly elections scheduled for later this month.
In light of this decision, Somnath Dutta, a seasoned member of the Trinamool Congress from the region, has stepped in as the party's primary candidate, having submitted his nomination as a secondary candidate just a day prior.
The Returning Officer for the Krishnanagar (Uttar) Assembly constituency enacted the cancellation under Section 9A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, citing conflicts arising from Bhattacharya's business dealings with the West Bengal government.
According to regulations, individuals engaged in government employment or with business affiliations to the government are prohibited from contesting elections. The ECI highlighted that Bhattacharya's role as a state contractor disqualified him from running.
Bhattacharya expressed disappointment over the situation, stating he would not act contrary to the directives issued by his party leadership.
Mahua Moitra, a Trinamool Congress member of parliament from Krishnanagar, confirmed the change in candidacy, declaring Somnath Dutta as the new representative for the Krishnanagar (Uttar) constituency.
Recognizing potential complications regarding Bhattacharya's candidacy, the Trinamool Congress had preemptively positioned Dutta as a backup candidate just before the nomination deadline.
With Bhattacharya's candidacy now nullified, Dutta will represent the Trinamool Congress in the upcoming elections.
A similar incident occurred with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2024, involving the candidate for the Birbhum Lok Sabha constituency. Debashis Dhar, a former IPS officer, had his nomination revoked due to his failure to provide a 'no dues' certificate from the West Bengal government after resigning from police service. This led to Debtanu Bhattacharya, who had previously filed as a second candidate, becoming the new BJP nominee.
