Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 6 (NationPress) On Friday, the Trinamool Congress announced the formation of a three-member delegation to engage with the full bench of the Election Commission of India (ECI) in Kolkata on Monday.
This delegation is composed of Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra from the Krishnanagar constituency in Nadia district, Rajya Sabha MP Samirul Islam, and West Bengal's Minister of State for Finance (Independent Charge) Chandrima Bhattacharya.
According to a source within the Trinamool Congress, the delegation aims to advocate for the postponement of the election schedule for the upcoming Assembly elections in West Bengal until the resolution of the ongoing judicial review regarding voter documents labeled as “logical discrepancy” cases.
Additionally, the delegation is anticipated to bring to light cases where “alive” voters have been incorrectly classified as “dead” during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the state, as per the insider.
The ECI's full bench, led by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, is set to arrive in Kolkata on the evening of March 8.
On March 9, the Commission will conduct discussions with representatives from various registered political parties between 10 a.m. and 12 noon, with each party allotted a span of 10 minutes to present their perspectives.
As the ruling party in West Bengal, the Trinamool Congress is expected to receive the first opportunity to speak during the meeting, according to sources from the Chief Electoral Officer’s office in West Bengal.
In parallel, a significant hearing regarding the ongoing judicial review of the “logical discrepancy” cases is scheduled in the Supreme Court on March 10.
Originally, more than 60 lakh voter documents were submitted for judicial review.
The final electoral roll for West Bengal, excluding those cases pending judicial adjudication, was published on February 28. A supplementary list is to be released later, as per a prior directive from the Supreme Court.
