Kolkata, Jan 5 (NationPress) In preparation for the significant Assembly elections in West Bengal later this year, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has instructed the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal to provide weekly, district-specific reports on the law and order situation throughout the state.

According to the Commission’s instructions, district magistrates, who serve as district electoral officers (DEOs), are required to send weekly updates regarding the law and order status in their respective areas to the office of the CEO. This office will then compile these reports and send them to the ECI headquarters in New Delhi each week.

“The Commission's assessment of these weekly reports will be vital in deciding the level of deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) personnel for the upcoming Assembly elections,” shared a source from the CEO’s office.

This development follows a meeting at the ECI headquarters in New Delhi, attended by West Bengal CEO Manoj Kumar Agarwal. The meeting was led by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh and included the CEOs from four states preparing for elections — Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala — along with the Union Territory of Puducherry.

“The Commission has started closely monitoring the law and order conditions in the four election-bound states and one Union Territory, with a particular emphasis on West Bengal. Additionally, 15 nodal agencies, from both central and state levels, have been appointed to aid in the review process,” disclosed the insider from the CEO’s office.

The forthcoming Assembly elections in West Bengal are anticipated to see a considerably greater deployment of CAPF personnel compared to the previous elections in 2016 and 2021. This increase is largely due to recommendations for fewer voting phases than in the last two elections.

According to an insider from the CEO’s office, the suggestion is to conduct the elections in a single phase, or at most, two phases if necessary. “This approach will naturally necessitate a higher deployment of CAPF companies compared to the last two Assembly elections. All these matters are set to be discussed at a significant meeting at the ECI office in New Delhi today,” the source stated.

In 2021, the West Bengal Assembly elections took place over eight phases, with the first round on March 27 and the final round on April 29.

In 2016, the elections were conducted in six phases, with the first phase spanning two days, effectively making it a seven-phase election.

Point of View

I see this move by the ECI as a necessary measure to ensure fair and secure elections in West Bengal. The focus on weekly law and order reports highlights the importance of maintaining peace during such a politically significant time. It's a step that reinforces the integrity of our electoral process, which is essential for democracy.
