Kolkata, Jan 2 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) has found it necessary to hire Oriya interpreters-cum-translators for four gram panchayats, specifically two from the Dantan and Mohanpur community development blocks in West Midnapore district, as part of hearings regarding claims and objections on the draft voters’ list.

This decision stems from the fact that the majority of voters in these four gram panchayats, situated near the West Bengal-Odisha border, primarily speak Oriya.

“The enumeration forms submitted by these voters are predominantly in Oriya scripts, which has made it essential to appoint Oriya interpreters-cum-translators for hearing sessions,” noted a senior official from the CEO’s office.

These voters, with ancestral ties to Odisha, have been living in these gram panchayats across two community development blocks for generations, relying mostly on agriculture and animal husbandry for their livelihoods.

“Many new brides in these families also originate from Odisha and are fluent only in Oriya. Consequently, it has become exceedingly challenging for Electoral Registration Officers, Assistant Electoral Registration Officers, and Booth-level Officers who mainly speak Bengali to communicate effectively with these Oriya-speaking voters, underscoring the necessity of hiring Oriya interpreters during these hearings,” the official elaborated.

Despite Oriya-speaking voters being spread across various regions in both East Midnapore and West Midnapore districts, the density of such voters is notably higher in the four gram panchayats under the Dantan and Mohanpur blocks.

“Verbal communication during the hearings poses significant challenges for ERO, AERO, and micro-observers. Moreover, translating the Oriya scripts on their enumeration forms is time-consuming, resulting in longer hearing sessions for these voters compared to others,” confirmed the source from the CEO’s office.

The draft voters' list was released on December 16, with the final version set to be published on February 14. Subsequently, the ECI will reveal the polling dates for the upcoming Assembly elections in West Bengal.
