Chennai, Dec 27 (NationPress) In a bid to promote maximum participation in the electoral process, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has introduced a series of special voter registration camps throughout Tamil Nadu. This initiative aims to help eligible citizens either register on the electoral rolls or update their information.
This announcement comes in the wake of the draft electoral roll's release for the state on December 19, following the conclusion of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process.
According to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Tamil Nadu, Archana Patnaik, over 97 lakh names were removed from the draft voter list during this revision. Among these, approximately 66 lakh voters were identified as having changed their residence, while the rest were removed due to duplication, death, or ineligibility.
Individuals whose names were excluded have been granted a one-month window to re-register, with January 18 being the final date for application submissions.
In light of the significant number of omissions, the Election Commission has initiated a four-day special voter registration drive across the state.
The first phase of this special camp is set for Saturday and Sunday, with another round on January 3 and 4. These camps will be available at all polling stations across Tamil Nadu, covering around 75,000 booths.
During these special camps, eligible citizens can apply for inclusion in the electoral roll using Form 6. They may also request corrections to personal details or the transposition of their names if they have moved within the constituency.
Officials have reported that 1,68,825 applications for new voter inclusion have already been received since the draft roll's publication. The CEO has encouraged all eligible citizens, especially those whose names were excluded from the draft list, to take full advantage of this opportunity. She highlighted the importance of accurate and updated electoral rolls for ensuring free, fair, and inclusive elections.
Election officials will be available at all polling stations during the special camp days to assist applicants, verify documents, and ensure the smooth processing of forms.
Moreover, citizens are encouraged to verify their details through the online voter portal and take corrective measures before the final electoral roll is published.
