Guwahati, July 29 (NationPress) In a remarkable initiative aimed at boosting environmental sustainability and advancing scientific waste management techniques, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has initiated an extensive survey to implement an Integrated Garbage Treatment System (IGTS), as reported by officials on Tuesday.
NFR’s Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO), Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, stated that the IGTS will be set up at NFR headquarters in Maligaon, close to Guwahati, as well as at the Pandu Railway Colonies within the Lumding railway division.
He added that the survey is being carried out by the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG), under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) established with NFR.
This partnership entails IITG providing technical advice and conducting thorough field studies to evaluate the feasibility, design, and execution strategy of the proposed system.
The project is anticipated to set a standard in intelligent and sustainable waste disposal across railway establishments, according to Sharma.
Upon completion of the field survey, a Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be created and submitted to NFR. This DPR will detail the necessary infrastructure, estimated costs, treatment methodologies, and timelines for implementation.
The proposed integrated garbage treatment system aims at source segregation, scientific disposal of biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste, composting, and recycling, all aligned with Swachh Bharat Mission guidelines and national waste management protocols, the official noted.
This initiative is designed to enhance overall cleanliness, hygiene, and living conditions for railway employees and their families residing in these colonies.
Furthermore, it will aid in minimizing the environmental impact of railway operations and contribute to a zero-waste colony model, Sharma emphasized.
The CPRO reiterated that the Northeast Frontier Railway remains committed to sustainable practices, infrastructural innovation, and improving the quality of life for its employees and surrounding communities.
