The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday, 30 July conducted a search at the Coimbatore residence of Azharuddin, an accused in the 2019 Sri Lanka Easter Sunday serial bombings, as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged money laundering and financial transactions linked to the conspiracy. The search targeted his home in Anbu Nagar, Ukkadam, and was carried out by a team of ED officials supported by central security personnel and local police.

How the Search Unfolded

Officials commenced the operation in the morning and conducted an extensive search lasting several hours. Investigators examined a range of documents, electronic devices, and financial records to trace suspected money trails and determine whether any proceeds of crime were connected to the wider conspiracy. Bank records and other materials are also reportedly under scrutiny as part of the financial probe.

Security was tightened across the locality during the operation, with police restricting public movement around the premises. Who Is Azharuddin

Azharuddin was previously arrested in connection with the coordinated Easter Sunday suicide bombings that struck Sri Lanka on 21 April 2019, killing more than 250 people and injuring hundreds more. He is currently lodged at Viyyur Central Prison in Kerala while legal proceedings in the case continue.

Ukkadam's History in Terror Probes

The latest ED action has once again placed Ukkadam under the national security spotlight. The locality has featured in multiple terror-related investigations over the years. Most notably, on the eve of Deepavali in October 2022, a lone-wolf attack occurred near the Sangameswarar Temple when a car explosion killed the perpetrator — later identified as extremist Jamesha Mubeen, who died in what investigators concluded was a suicide blast. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) subsequently launched an extensive probe into that incident.

The ED's focus in the current operation is on establishing financial linkages — specifically, whether funds were routed through Azharuddin's accounts or associates to support the Sri Lanka Easter bombings conspiracy. According to sources, the agency is building a money-laundering case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), which runs parallel to the criminal proceedings already underway.
