What Are the Outcomes of ED's Special Review Meeting on High-Profile Financial Cases in West Bengal?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 23 (NationPress) A dedicated session of the Enforcement Directorate (ED), led by its Director Rahul Navin, commenced at the agency's Kolkata headquarters on Friday to assess the advancements in its ongoing inquiries into prominent financial crime cases in West Bengal.
Navin arrived in Kolkata on Thursday evening.
According to sources, the review meeting focuses on discussing the developments in various high-profile financial crime cases in West Bengal.
The entire CGO complex, housing the ED office in the Salt Lake area, is enveloped in a robust security framework provided by central armed police forces (CAPF) due to the significance of this meeting.
The investigating officers involved have prepared detailed progress reports for presentation to the Director. These reports outline the current status of individual cases, as revealed by agency insiders.
During the meeting, Navin is anticipated to provide essential directives regarding the forthcoming steps in the investigations.
"The discussions will cover cases such as coal smuggling, irregularities in recruitment for state-run schools and municipalities in West Bengal, and notably, the involvement of the Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC) in the coal smuggling scandal," a source disclosed.
The ED Director is also expected to issue vital instructions for investigative officials as they conduct raids and searches, especially in light of recent controversies surrounding operations at I-PAC’s Salt Lake office and the residence of co-founder Pratik Jain.
On the morning of January 6, while raids were in progress at these locations, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, along with senior bureaucrats and police officials, visited both sites and departed with numerous files and electronic documents.
Since 2020, I-PAC has been functioning as the electoral strategy agency for the Trinamool Congress.
Currently, two petitions and counter-petitions regarding this matter are being reviewed at the Supreme Court. The primary petition was lodged by the ED, accusing the Chief Minister of abusing her constitutional powers to obstruct the investigation by a central agency.
In response, the Trinamool has filed a counter-petition, alleging that the ED is attempting to seize crucial documents related to the party’s strategy for the upcoming Assembly elections to hand them over to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
