Ministry of Education Considers Expansion of Class IX Scholarship Program
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 12 (NationPress) The Ministry of Education has placed a spotlight on optimizing quota utilization and ensuring scholarship continuity for students in Classes IX to XII. This focus was highlighted during a recent workshop aimed at State/UT and District level Officers overseeing the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS), as reported on Thursday.
Sanjay Kumar, the Secretary of the Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSEL), emphasized the importance of effectively implementing the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 at the foundational level.
The NMMSS provides scholarships to academically talented students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds to curb dropout rates after Class VIII and to motivate them to pursue education at the secondary level.
The workshop featured interactive sessions with State Nodal Officers of the scheme, offering practical insights and solutions to the challenges encountered at grassroots levels, as noted in an official statement.
Each year, 100,000 new scholarships are granted to eligible students in Class IX, with opportunities for continuation or renewal from Classes X to XII for those enrolled in state government, government-aided, and local body schools. The scholarship amount is Rs 12,000 per annum.
To qualify for these scholarships, students must have a parental income not exceeding Rs 3,50,000 per annum. Additionally, they need to achieve a minimum of 55% marks or an equivalent grade in the Class VII examination to be eligible for the selection test (this requirement is relaxed by 5% for SC/ST students).
Among the officials participating in the discussions were A. Srija, Economic Advisor at DoSEL; Bhupal Nanda, Principal at CCA, MoE; and Dr. Pankaj K. P. Shreyaskar, Deputy Director General (Statistics) at DoSEL.
During the workshop, Shreyaskar highlighted the transformation of UDISE+ into a real-time, digital-first platform.
Srija stressed the necessity for timely verification by State-Level Officers on the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) to ensure that students from economically weaker sections receive their payments promptly.
This initiative signifies DoSEL's dedication to ensuring a timely, transparent, and student-centric execution of central scholarship programs throughout the region.
