Vadodara, July 6 (NationPress) A 22-year-old engineering student tragically took his own life by jumping from the 8th floor of a residential building in Gujarat.

The deceased was a second-year mechanical engineering student at M.S. University and jumped from the Maple Vista building located near Akshar Chowk.

Emergency services, comprising the police, 108 ambulances, and the fire brigade, quickly responded after being alerted about the incident.

Unfortunately, by the time they arrived, the student had already jumped. The 108 ambulance team attempted to revive him using CPR, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination, and the JP Road Police have commenced an investigation. As of now, no suicide note has been found, leaving the motive behind this tragic decision unclear.

As of 2025, Gujarat is facing a troubling rise in suicide rates, especially in urban areas.

Recent reports indicate that Ahmedabad alone recorded over 100 suicide deaths within the first 45 days of the year, highlighting a significant increase in mental health issues. Major cities like Ahmedabad, Surat, and Rajkot have become hotspots for such incidents, collectively accounting for thousands of deaths each year.

In the three years preceding 2025, Gujarat witnessed over 25,500 suicides, with 8,557 cases recorded in 2022–23 alone. This trend underscores a persistent mental health crisis compounded by socio-economic pressures, exam-related stress among students, unemployment, and unresolved family conflicts.

Particularly alarming is the trend of student suicides. Between 2020 and 2023, nearly 500 cases were reported, with Ahmedabad having the highest numbers. The latest findings suggest that academic stress, peer pressure, and inadequate mental health support are critical factors contributing to this issue.

From 2022 to 2025, the number of attempted suicides has also seen an uptick, indicating a broader emotional and psychological strain within society.

Common reasons cited for suicides across Gujarat include family conflicts, financial difficulties, chronic health issues, relationship problems, and rising unemployment, especially among the youth.

There have been cases where entire families have tragically taken their lives due to debt and societal pressures, such as the mass suicide of a family in Mehsana that shocked the state earlier this year.

While the government has set up helplines such as Jeevan Aastha (1800 233 3330), Abhayam (181), and Jindagi (1096), along with awareness campaigns in educational institutions, the impact is hindered by stigma, limited access in rural regions, and a shortage of mental health professionals.

Point of View

The ongoing mental health crisis in Gujarat, highlighted by this tragic incident, necessitates a robust response from authorities. Addressing the socio-economic factors and providing adequate mental health resources are crucial steps to prevent further tragedies. As a nation, we must prioritize mental well-being and support systems for our youth.
