Ex-Registrar of Prestigious West Bengal University Fired After Suspension

Kolkata, Dec 13 (NationPress) The suspended registrar of the esteemed Rabindra Bharati University (RBU), Subir Maitra, has been officially dismissed from his position on several counts of misconduct, prominently including financial irregularities.

This decision regarding his termination was conveyed to him through a formal communiqué that was issued on Thursday evening, as reported by a source within the university.

Months ago, an inquiry was launched against Maitra following serious allegations concerning his financial dealings.

On November 5, the inquiry officer presented a detailed report to the university's administration based on the findings related to the case. Subsequently, the university authorities assessed the report and issued a show-cause notice to Maitra, requesting his response within a week.

After reviewing his response to the notice, insiders indicated that the authorities re-evaluated the report’s findings, witness statements, and Maitra's reply.

After a thorough analysis of all pertinent information, the university authorities made the definitive choice to terminate his employment, which was communicated to him through a communiqué dated Thursday.

It has been reported that following his dismissal, certain retirement benefits will also be withheld. Additionally, he will be required to reimburse the losses incurred due to the financial misconduct he was involved in.

Maitra was initially suspended as the university registrar and was subsequently succeeded by an acting registrar once the inquiry commenced.

Since July 2023, Rabindra Bharati University has been operating without a full-time vice-chancellor, currently overseen by a former Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court, who was appointed as the interim vice-chancellor by Governor C.V. Ananda Bose.

The government of West Bengal has accused the Governor of appointing the interim vice-chancellor without prior consultation with the state’s education department.

Recently, the West Bengal education department has initiated the process to appoint a full-time vice-chancellor by forming a search committee for this purpose.
