Agartala, April 16 (NationPress) Tragically, two workers, including a woman from MGNREGA, lost their lives and two others sustained serious injuries when a large tree was uprooted and fell on them in Tripura’s hilly Dhalai district on Wednesday, officials reported.

A representative from the district administration revealed that the massive tree fell on the workers as they were engaged in excavating a check dam on government land under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) in Nailafabari, located in the Ambassa block of Dhalai district.

A check dam is a small dam constructed across a channel, ditch, or stream to help mitigate erosion and regulate water flow. These dams are commonly utilized in agricultural endeavors, hilly terrains, and arid regions.

The official confirmed that Robert Malsum (22) was pronounced dead at the scene, while three other injured individuals – Juhi Rani Malsum (26), Surjyasa Malsum (35), and Jagat Bhakta Malsum (5) – were swiftly transported to a government hospital, where Juhi Rani ultimately succumbed to her injuries during treatment.

The Ambassa block authorities have provided initial compensation to the families of the deceased and injured workers.

The MGNREGA was introduced as an Act in Parliament to offer a legal framework for the scheme. The primary goal of this Act is to improve livelihood security in rural regions by guaranteeing at least 100 days of wage employment annually for every household whose adult members are willing to perform unskilled manual labor.

The primary aim of this scheme is to increase wage employment, while its secondary goal is to enhance natural resource management through initiatives that tackle the root causes of chronic poverty, such as drought, deforestation, and soil erosion, thereby promoting sustainable development.

The execution of the scheme requires a cooperative partnership between the Central and state governments, along with the Panchayati Raj Institutions.

The Central government covers 90 percent of the expenses for employment provided under this program in the northeastern states, with the remaining 10 percent funded by the state. The scheme's implementation is closely overseen at both the state and district levels.
