Bhubaneswar, Feb 22 (NationPress) In a devastating road incident, five police officers lost their lives, and three others were critically injured in a collision that occurred early Sunday morning outside the Sadar Police Station in the Jharsuguda district.
The police personnel who tragically passed away have been named as Kashiram Bhoi (APR), Niranjan Kujur (Drill Sub-Inspector), Debadatta Sa (APR), Lingaraj Dhurua (APR Havildar), and Bhaktabandhu Mirdha (Home Guard).
The injured officers include Dubaraj Mirig (APR), Akash Naik (APR), and Rajiv Bharsagar (Sergeant), and they are currently receiving medical treatment at the Jharsuguda District Headquarters Hospital.
The tragic accident occurred when a fast-moving iron rod-laden trailer truck collided head-on with a Bolero vehicle transporting the police personnel. This tragic event unfolded right in front of the Jharsuguda Sadar Police Station.
A local resident shared, “A grave accident transpired today on National Highway 49, where five policemen who were returning to duty after attending a wedding lost their lives. The families of these brave officers are devastated after losing their primary earners in this mishap.”
Residents are expressing their frustration over the alleged negligence of the government and NHAI authorities regarding the long-standing request for the expansion of the highway from two lanes to four lanes.
“Every day, thousands of vehicles, both light and heavy, traverse this road to destinations like Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Mumbai, and Nagpur. For the past twenty years, there has been a persistent demand to upgrade the road to four lanes. Yet, all plans seem to remain on paper, with no real action taken. Such road accidents are commonplace here. The government must urgently address this issue,” the resident added.
In the wake of the accident, law enforcement has initiated an investigation, detaining the truck driver and seizing the vehicle involved in the incident.
