Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday, 8 July conducted a comprehensive inspection of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway across multiple stretches in Rajasthan, reviewing safety measures, construction quality, and traffic management along the corridor. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma accompanied Gadkari during the inspection in Bundi district.

Key Developments on the Ground

The delegation visited the Labana Interchange in Bundi district, stopping at multiple points along the route to assess ongoing construction work. Earlier in the day, Gadkari had arrived in Alwar district, where he chaired a review meeting at the Pinan rest area with officials of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

Senior officials from both the NHAI and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways accompanied the minister and briefed him through a detailed presentation on the expressway's progress, maintenance protocols, and safety infrastructure.

What Gadkari Directed

At the Pinan rest area, Gadkari issued a series of directives to NHAI and police officials aimed at tightening safety standards. He instructed authorities to intensify patrolling, improve emergency response times, and enforce a strict ban on indiscriminate truck parking along the expressway — a practice officials acknowledge contributes to accidents.

The minister also stressed the need for stronger speed monitoring and surveillance, directing that existing systems be augmented without delay. This comes amid broader concerns about road safety on high-speed expressway corridors, where accident severity tends to be significantly higher than on conventional highways.

What the State Government Said

Rajasthan Deputy Chief Minister Diya Kumari, speaking at the Pinan rest area, said the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway had 'significantly reduced travel time between Delhi and Mumbai, boosting trade, tourism and connectivity.' She noted that the Union government had already rolled out several safety upgrades, including enhanced emergency response systems, CCTV surveillance, and speed monitoring devices.

Kumari added that the inspection was specifically aimed at ensuring no compromise on construction quality or road safety standards. She also acknowledged that the government remained attentive to incidents such as vehicle fires and was actively working to reinforce safety mechanisms on the corridor.

Officials and Representatives Present

Rajasthan Education Minister Madan Dilawar, Minister of State for Energy (Independent Charge) Hiralal Nagar, other public representatives, local officials, and residents were present at various locations along the route, welcoming the delegation. Chief Minister Sharma also visited an exhibition organised at the venue during the inspection.
