Rahul Gandhi Criticizes AINRC-BJP Government for Counterfeit Drug Crisis in Puducherry
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Puducherry, April 6 (NationPress) Intensifying his efforts ahead of the April 9 Assembly elections in Puducherry, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday condemned the All India N.R. Congress–BJP administration for overseeing a grave public health dilemma, asserting that there is a widespread issue of counterfeit medicine production and distribution within the Union Territory.
During a public gathering, Gandhi claimed that Puducherry has become a center for the manufacturing of fake drugs, with officials allegedly ignoring the situation.
He warned that this problem has significant repercussions, as these fraudulent medications are being distributed beyond the region without proper oversight.
Taking a decisive position, Gandhi stated that this issue transcends mere corruption.
"This isn't just corruption -- it's akin to murder. Spurious drugs are being circulated across India, endangering innocent lives," he declared, eliciting enthusiastic applause from party members and supporters in attendance.
Moreover, Gandhi accused the administration of rampant corruption in government contracts, alleging that a standard "30 percent commission" is being systematically extracted in the Union Territory.
"It is common knowledge that commissions are being charged on every contract. This has led to institutionalized corruption under the current regime," he asserted.
He further accused the administration of failing to act despite multiple concerns being raised, allowing illegal activities to persist unchecked and eroding public confidence in governance.
Addressing economic issues, Gandhi noted that Puducherry’s previously prosperous industrial and textile sectors are now declining.
He claimed that numerous factories have closed due to policy missteps and inadequate governance, resulting in job losses and economic hardships for the youth.
Presenting the Congress agenda, Gandhi stated that the party aims to prioritize transparency in governance and rejuvenate vital economic sectors. He also highlighted the importance of restoring confidence among investors and small businesses. He assured that if the Congress alliance comes to power, civic body elections -- which have been overdue for years -- would be conducted within six months, along with initiatives to enhance administrative accountability.
