Puducherry, Feb 12 (NationPress) The Puducherry Legislative Assembly is scheduled to meet on Thursday, with Chief Minister N. Rangasamy poised to deliver an interim Budget during what is anticipated to be the last session of the current legislative body before the upcoming Assembly elections.

Rangasamy, who also serves as the Finance Minister, will present the interim Budget, which functions as a vote-on-account, to secure authorization for government spending over the next five months.

This year, Puducherry typically unveils its complete Budget in March; however, due to the impending elections and the government’s term ending in April, an interim financial statement is deemed necessary rather than a full annual Budget.

The Assembly session is set to commence with tribute acknowledgments. Following this, the Chief Minister will introduce the interim Budget. Furthermore, the government is likely to pursue legislative consent for additional spending that has occurred during the current fiscal year.

Intense discussions are expected during this session, as opposition parties including the Congress and the DMK are preparing to raise various issues, notably allegations of corruption and worries about the distribution of counterfeit medications within the union territory.

The NR Congress-BJP coalition government, under Rangasamy’s leadership, took office following the 2021 Assembly elections.

With their term concluding in April, this session represents the final Assembly meeting for the current administration.

Following the elections and the establishment of a new government, the House will reconvene, at which point a comprehensive Budget will be presented.

The Election Commission is anticipated to reveal the election timetable by the end of this month. Once the dates are confirmed, the Model Code of Conduct will become effective.

As per election regulations, ministers and MLAs will be required to return their official vehicles and relinquish their Assembly offices to the Legislative Secretariat.

The 33-member Puducherry Assembly includes 30 elected MLAs and three nominated members.

Out of the elected officials, 10 are from the NR Congress, six from the BJP, six from the DMK, two from the Congress, and six are Independents. All three nominated MLAs are affiliated with the BJP.
