New Delhi, March 3 (NationPress) Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in Lok Sabha, has voiced strong concerns regarding the substantial vacancies in the leadership roles of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) and the National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC), challenging the Union government's inaction.

Highlighting constitutional mandates that require the appointment of a Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, and members to both commissions, the veteran Congress leader noted that the Vice-Chairperson role in the NCSC has remained unfilled for nearly a year, despite the recent appointment of the Chairperson and two members to the 7th NCSC.

He pointed out that previous commissions typically included at least two members.

In a letter to Virendra Kumar, the Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment, a copy of which was obtained by IANS, Gandhi underscored the vital function of the NCSC in defending the rights of Dalits.

He mentioned that the NCSC tackles issues like public employment, educational access, and the prevention of atrocities.

“Across India, thousands have pursued justice through the NCSC, which has been instrumental in highlighting barriers to the social and economic progress of Dalits,” wrote Rahul Gandhi in a tone of concern, adding, “The intentional attempt to diminish and weaken the NCSC reveals the anti-Dalit attitude of this administration.”

The ongoing vacancy in the Vice-Chairperson position raises questions about the government's dedication to the commission's responsibilities.

Gandhi also noted a similar issue within the NCBC, where the Vice-Chairperson role has been unoccupied for nearly three years.

The NCBC is currently functioning with only a Chairperson and one member, contrary to the constitutional requirement for a Vice-Chairperson and a minimum of three members.

“This intentional neglect, particularly as the demand for a caste census intensifies nationwide, is astonishing,” he remarked, underscoring the need for immediate action to fill these vacancies.

Gandhi insisted that social justice must be central to a comprehensive vision for India. He called on the government to empower these institutions to meet their constitutional obligations by swiftly addressing the vacancies in both commissions.
