Why is Gaurav Gogoi Criticizing Himanta Biswa Sarma Over His Children?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, Feb 9 (NationPress) Gaurav Gogoi, the president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee and Lok Sabha MP, has vehemently condemned Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for reportedly involving his minor children in a political dispute. He labeled this action as unacceptable and a violation of political decency.
During a press conference, Gogoi asserted that political disagreements should remain confined to leaders and must never entangle children.
Expressing his distress over the mention of his young children, aged five and nine, he emphasized that such statements have no place in public discussions.
“I am ready to confront any personal attacks aimed at me, but I will not stay silent if my children, Congress supporters, or everyday citizens become targets,” Gogoi declared, warning that he would pursue this matter “to the fullest extent” should such behavior persist.
He urged the Chief Minister to refrain from further personal attacks.
Gogoi accused CM Sarma of degrading the respectability of political dialogue, noting that the Chief Minister had even disclosed sensitive information regarding his children.
“We are also aware of his family background; this is common knowledge. However, we have never engaged in such behavior,” he remarked, adding that these comments have caused embarrassment for Assam.
Questioning the accuracy of the circulating claims, Gogoi suggested that misleading information was being intentionally propagated.
He asserted that the situation is serious enough to warrant the Supreme Court’s intervention, proposing that the court should take suo motu cognizance of the issue.
“Do not compel me into a position where I must retaliate,” Gogoi warned ominously.
Discussing his family life, the Congress MP stated that his wife is an independent person fully capable of caring for their children.
He drew a parallel from his upbringing, noting he was primarily raised by his mother and that his children are being reared similarly.
“When they reach 18, they will have the freedom to make their own choices,” he added.
Gogoi emphasized that the purpose of the press conference was not for political showmanship but to uphold the integrity of the media and the people of Assam.
He concluded by stating that involving children in political disputes has brought disgrace to the state and is unbecoming of someone in the Chief Minister’s position. “I am in politics to address the concerns of the people of Assam. Let the public decide,” he stated.
