Guwahati, Feb 8 (NationPress) Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has intensified his political rhetoric against Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi regarding the British citizenship of his two children. He emphasized that this matter raises critical questions about the choices made by those in public office.

In a conversation with IANS, CM Sarma drew parallels with senior Congress figure Sonia Gandhi, pointing out that despite her Italian heritage, she never pushed for her children to obtain Italian citizenship.

“Sonia Gandhi has never insisted that her children hold Italian citizenship. However, the Jorhat MP ensured his children became British citizens,” remarked the Chief Minister.

Sarma contended that such a decision indicates a troubling mindset and cannot simply be dismissed as a private decision when a sitting MP is involved. He claimed that Gogoi had voluntarily relinquished the Indian citizenship of one of his children, a decision he believes warrants public attention.

“This isn't about personal insults. As a Member of Parliament, your actions and choices are open to public discourse,” Sarma stated, asserting that citizenship issues carry added weight in India, especially amidst national security discussions.

The Chief Minister also pointed out discrepancies in previous public comments regarding the citizenship status of Gogoi's children, suggesting that these matters have surfaced during an ongoing investigation into the alleged foreign connections of Gogoi's family.

Furthermore, Sarma claimed that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi should take appropriate measures against Gaurav Gogoi, alleging that the Congress MP has renounced his children's citizenship.

On the same day, Sarma brought forth serious allegations that Gaurav Gogoi, who previously visited Pakistan, went silent on social media for a period of at least 10 days, coinciding with a shift in visa permissions by Pakistan's interior ministry.

“During Gogoi's visit to Pakistan in 2013, the interior ministry altered his access to specific cities, and he was completely inactive online. This raises numerous questions about his conduct during that time,” Sarma asserted.

According to the Chief Minister, Gogoi may have participated in “training” sessions while in Islamabad for those ten days.

“After that period of silence, he changed dramatically. It was December 2013 when Gogoi visited Pakistan, and he became a Lok Sabha MP in 2014. Once he entered Parliament, he began posing sensitive questions related to national security, and this chain of events deepens my suspicion that the Congress leader was influenced by Pakistan's intelligence agencies during his visit,” Sarma concluded.

Point of View

This situation underscores the interplay between personal choices and public responsibilities. While Gaurav Gogoi's decisions regarding his children's citizenship may seem personal, they invoke critical discussions about loyalty and national identity, especially for elected officials. The ongoing scrutiny reflects the public's right to question the integrity of their representatives.
