Body of Gayasuddin Qureshi Exhumed in Jabalpur for Investigation
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Jabalpur, April 8 (NationPress) Almost a year after the burial of Gayasuddin Qureshi, his remains were exhumed on Wednesday in Madhya Pradesh's Jabalpur, reigniting the investigation into the circumstances of his death and his family's ongoing quest for answers.
The exhumation took place under the oversight of the Adhartal Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), adhering to directives issued by the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
Recently, a bench including Justice Vivek Agarwal and Justice A.K. Singh mandated that this procedure be finalized promptly, with a post-mortem examination to occur the same day.
After the exhumation, the body was transported to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College, where medical professionals are set to perform a comprehensive post-mortem to ascertain the exact cause of Gayasuddin Qureshi's demise, as reported by an official on Wednesday.
Gayasuddin passed away on March 27, 2025.
At that time, his body was interred without a post-mortem, as claimed by his family.
However, months later, his brother Kasimuddin Qureshi, who lives in Jabalpur, expressed doubts, citing injury marks found in medical records and suggesting that the death could have resulted from foul play.
In his appeal, Kasimuddin pointed out that the discharge summary from the Jabalpur hospital noted injuries on his brother's chest and argued that the death should not be considered natural, advocating for a new post-mortem.
Taking this matter seriously, the court emphasized the necessity of exhumation to reveal the truth and prevent justice from being obstructed by procedural errors.
The court also raised concerns regarding the police's initial actions in this case, particularly the choice to conduct a preliminary inquiry without filing an FIR, despite the allegations of a cognizable offense.
Furthermore, the court instructed the Narsinghpur Superintendent of Police, Rishikesh Meena, to submit a personal affidavit clarifying the legal justification for such actions.
As we await the post-mortem report, the case now relies on medical findings that could reveal whether the death was accidental or involved wrongdoing, potentially leading to a criminal inquiry.
