Jaunpur, April 18 (NationPress) The remains of Ghurahu Bind, a 49-year-old fisherman from Jaunpur district in Uttar Pradesh, who passed away under mysterious circumstances while incarcerated in a Pakistani jail, are anticipated to reach his hometown on Friday, as confirmed by District Magistrate Dinesh Chandra.
Officials have stated that Bind, a resident of Basiraha village in Jaunpur's Machhlishahr tehsil, was captured in 2020 by the Pakistan Coast Guard after allegedly straying into Pakistani waters while fishing near the Okha coast in Gujarat.
Chandra reported that the deceased's body has been transported to the Wagah border and is currently on its way to Jaunpur.
Bind was imprisoned alongside three other fishermen from his village, who continue to remain in custody even after five years.
The family of the deceased suggested that Bind may have taken his own life due to torture endured while in the Pakistani prison.
A message circulating via WhatsApp in the village indicated that his death occurred approximately 15 days prior.
The family has requested a post-mortem examination in India to ascertain the true cause of Bind's death and has called for a formal investigation by the government.
The District Magistrate mentioned that Bind's family, currently facing financial hardships, has been assessed by government officials and will receive support through state welfare programs, including the Chief Minister Housing Scheme and widow pension.
"The family will receive all eligible benefits, and instructions have been given to the Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Machhlishahr to ensure proper arrangements for the last rites," he stated.
The news of Bind's passing was officially communicated to his family by the Department of Fisheries on Tuesday, following a notification from the Indian embassy and the Directorate of Fisheries in Lucknow.
Sambhashi Tripathi, Fisheries Inspector, visited the family to convey the sad news.
Bind is survived by his wife, two sons, and four daughters, three of whom are already married.
The family is currently living in dire poverty in a temporary shelter after their home collapsed.
Local residents, including village head Mrityunjay Bind, have urged the government to expedite assistance and facilitate the release of the three remaining fishermen.
During a wedding event in Machhlishahr on January 19, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh was informed by locals about the detention of six fishermen from Jaunpur and two from the nearby Bhadohi district in Pakistan.
Union Minister Rajnath Singh assured that he would raise the issue with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and that efforts would be made to secure their release.
