Jaipur, May 2 (NationPress) The final ceremonies for former Union Minister and prominent Congress leader Girija Vyas, who tragically passed away on Thursday after suffering severe burn injuries, were conducted in Udaipur on Friday evening. Her nephew, Vivek Sharma, was the one who ignited the funeral pyre at Ashok Nagar Mokshadham.

The last rites were carried out following Vedic traditions, accompanied by the chanting of sacred mantras. Earlier that day, numerous political figures from both Congress and BJP, including former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, took part in the funeral procession.

Gehlot also assisted in carrying Vyas' bier. She passed away at Zydus Hospital in Ahmedabad around 7:15 p.m. on Thursday evening.

Her remains were transported to Udaipur later that night, and on Friday morning, they were placed at her residence in Deityamgri for the public to pay their last respects.

Dr. Vyas had suffered significant burn injuries on March 31 during Gangaur Puja at her home when her dupatta accidentally ignited from a nearby lamp.

A domestic worker present at the scene promptly rushed to assist her. Initially, she was admitted to a private facility in Udaipur but was later transferred to Ahmedabad due to the severity of her injuries.

With 90 percent burn injuries, her health remained critical.

According to her brother, Gopal Sharma, although her condition showed some initial signs of improvement, it deteriorated in the subsequent days.

She passed away on May 1.

In addition to Gehlot, Congress leaders such as Govind Singh Dotasra, Tika Ram Jully, and many others from various parties also honored the former Union minister.

Former Congress president and political stalwart Sonia Gandhi also sent a letter of condolence to Vyas' brother, Gopal Sharma.

Despite receiving medical attention, Vyas' condition continued to decline due to the extensive burns.

Earlier, Gehlot remarked: "The loss of Dr. Girija Vyas is irreplaceable. Her contributions to education, politics, and social service will forever be cherished."

Girija Vyas held ministerial roles at both the national and state levels.

She occupied significant positions, including the President of the Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee and later served as the Chairperson of the National Commission for Women, advocating for numerous women's welfare initiatives.

In the 2018 Rajasthan Assembly elections, she ran from the Udaipur city constituency but faced defeat against the BJP’s Gulab Chand Kataria.

Recognized for her close ties with former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, Vyas was a key figure in Congress politics.

Born in Nathdwara, Rajsamand district, Vyas came from a family of noteworthy prominence.

Her father was a freedom fighter, and her mother was a teacher. She completed her higher education in Udaipur before earning a Ph.D. from Delhi University.

Before her political career, she worked as a professor of philosophy at Mohanlal Sukhadia University. Her premature death has left a significant void in Indian politics, particularly in Rajasthan, where she established a remarkable legacy of service.
