New Delhi, March 9 (NationPress) Union Minister Giriraj Singh criticized Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed on Sunday for her contentious assertion that Mathematics was brought to the world through Islam. Singh called on Mohamed to provide proof to back her statement.
In a conversation with IANS, Singh remarked, "I believe if someone is uninformed, I cannot comment on their ignorance. The global community recognizes the true founders of mathematics. Linking this to religion is absurd."
He further stated, "If she believes that Math originated from Islam, she should furnish evidence and engage in a meaningful dialogue."
Mohamed's comments have ignited debate, particularly following her recent criticism for allegedly body-shaming Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma.
Additionally, Mohamed had shown her support for Indian bowler Mohammed Shami, who faced backlash from certain Islamic factions for not observing Roza during the Champions Trophy semi-final against Australia. She characterized Islam as a "scientific" faith.
The BJP vehemently condemned her remarks regarding mathematics. BJP IT Cell head Amit Malviya remarked, "It seems she believes that Rahul Gandhi cannot be the only one making ridiculous statements in the Congress party."
This controversy follows another episode where Mohamed drew ire for a social media comment during India’s match against New Zealand.
In her post, she stated, "Rohit Sharma is overweight for a sportsman! Needs to shed some pounds! And evidently, he is the most unimpressive captain India has ever seen."
Her comments triggered strong reactions from Sharma's supporters, who defended his leadership using statistics. The BJP accused the Congress of exhibiting an "Emergency mindset" with such remarks.
Under increasing scrutiny, Mohamed eventually deleted her controversial comments and related posts defending her position. The Congress party also distanced itself from her statements and instructed her to remove the post.
