Government to Allocate Rs 1.08 Lakh Crore for Innovative Tunnel Developments: Nitin Gadkari

New Delhi, Dec 5 (NationPress) The government is set to allocate an additional Rs 1.08 lakh crore for 78 new tunnel initiatives across the nation, spanning a total distance of 285 km, aimed at enhancing world-class infrastructure, as stated by Union Minister of Road, Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari.

During his address at the 'World Tunnel Day 2024 Conference on Safe & Sustainable Tunnelling' held on Wednesday, the Minister highlighted the vast potential within the tunnel sector in India. He mentioned that the NHAI has successfully completed 35 tunnel projects covering 49 km with an investment of Rs 20,000 crore.

He noted, 'Around 75 tunnel projects covering 146 km are currently underway in the country at a cost of Rs 49,000 crore.'

'Our Prime Minister envisions making India the third-largest economy globally. To achieve this goal, we must establish international standards for infrastructure in our country. The government has prioritized the development of high-quality infrastructure,' the minister stressed.

Moreover, Minister Gadkari revealed that he had discussions with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma earlier this week regarding plans to construct a tunnel beneath the Brahmaputra River.

'There is immense potential for all contractors and consultants in this sector. Tunnels are critical not only for roads but also for hydro projects, metro, and railways,' he remarked.

The Minister further mentioned that the government is refining its approach to harness the best expertise for tunnel construction, considering the diverse terrain across India. The varying geology and water levels necessitate specialized knowledge.

He also emphasized the importance of strong collaboration between construction firms and various government departments to guarantee the highest quality standards in the projects.

In his concluding remarks, the Minister highlighted the necessity of involving IIT experts to explore the latest global technologies that could be adapted in India to align with international best practices.
