Surat flood recovery: 72-hour drive launched, 9,100+ families surveyed
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The Surat district administration has launched an intensive post-flood recovery operation on 10 July, with the Gujarat government targeting restoration of normal life, business activity, and commercial operations in the city's worst-hit areas within 48 to 72 hours of floodwaters receding. The drive covers over 9,100 flood-affected families already surveyed door-to-door across the city.
High-Level Review and Key Directives
The recovery effort is being conducted under the supervision of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel. Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi chaired a high-level review meeting late on Thursday night, attended by district coordination officers, senior officials of the Surat Municipal Corporation, and the district administration.
Sanghavi directed officials to prioritise three immediate tasks: rapid drainage of waterlogged areas, large-scale sanitation and cleaning operations, and public health measures to prevent water-borne disease outbreaks. He issued strict instructions to ensure no delay in relief delivery.
Financial Assistance and Survey Progress
Of the more than 9,100 families surveyed, over 800 affected households have already received financial assistance of ₹6,800 each towards household essentials and cash support. Separate teams have been deployed to ensure all remaining eligible families receive assistance by late Thursday night.
'The administration is working round the clock to provide immediate relief to citizens affected by the floods. A door-to-door survey of around 9,100 families has been completed, and assistance of ₹6,800 each has already reached more than 800 affected families. Separate teams have been deployed to ensure that all remaining eligible families receive the assistance by late tonight,' Sanghavi said.
Trader and Commercial Damage Assessment
The government has also initiated assessment of damage to traders and commercial establishments. Surveys covering markets, shops, and commercial premises across approximately 58 small and large lanes, neighbourhoods, and commercial areas in Surat are being completed on priority.
Survey findings will be placed before Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, under whose chairmanship a decision on government assistance for affected traders will be taken in the coming days, according to Sanghavi. He added that data was being proactively compiled to ensure financial assistance reaches traders without unnecessary delay.
Helpline and Special Officer Activated
To ensure no affected household is left out, the administration has appointed a special officer at the Surat Collector's office and activated a dedicated helpline. Residents of any locality or housing society omitted from the survey due to technical reasons can contact the helpline to register their details.
Sanghavi said the entire government machinery was working day and night under the Chief Minister's leadership. 'Within a very short time, Surat will once again stand resilient and resume its role as one of the country's engines of development,' he said. With surveys ongoing and commercial damage assessments under way, the pace of disbursement in the coming days will be the key test of the administration's response.
