Gujarat Launches Innovative Hi-Tech Nursery to Boost Afforestation and Preserve Rare Flora
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Banaskantha, March 6 (NationPress) The state of Gujarat is poised to inaugurate its inaugural hi-tech nursery in the village of Davas, situated in Deesa taluka of Banaskantha district, spanning an area of roughly 13 acres with an investment of approximately Rs 3.5 crore.
The initiative, overseen by the Gujarat Forest Department and the Social Forestry Department under the direction of Forest and Environment Minister Pravin Mali, is designed to bolster afforestation efforts and safeguard endangered plant species throughout the state.
Authorities stated that this nursery will exemplify a model for environmental stewardship within Gujarat.
“Our primary goal is to cultivate high-quality, disease-resistant, and vigorous plants by utilizing advanced technology, controlled environments, and scientific methods. This project will facilitate extensive afforestation and amplify the state's commitment to environmental preservation,” officials remarked.
The state-of-the-art nursery is expected to generate over 1 million saplings each year. Cutting-edge features, including a mist chamber, germination chamber, polyhouse, and net house, will promote optimal growth, even in challenging weather conditions.
Innovative techniques like soil-less media cultivation (growing plants without soil) will be employed to conserve plant species that are on the brink of extinction, thereby promoting healthier and quicker growth.
A seed bank and seed processing unit will be integral to the facility, enabling the scientific storage of rare and valuable seeds for long-term preservation.
Additionally, a 'Nursery Information Centre' will offer resources and guidance to students, farmers, and environmental advocates regarding plant cultivation, afforestation, and natural conservation.
The project will also incorporate a vermicomposting unit to produce organic fertilizers that will foster healthy plant development.
Methods aimed at cultivating tall and sturdy saplings will be introduced, supporting large-scale tree plantation initiatives across the state.
Officials emphasized that this nursery will not only enhance Gujarat’s green cover but also help maintain ecological balance and make significant contributions to the conservation of endangered plant species.
“This nursery will set a standard in modern agricultural technology, scientific afforestation, and environmental conservation, serving as a guide for other districts in the state,” they concluded.
