Gurugram Man Falls Victim to Rs 5 Lakh Cyber Fraud

Gurugram, December 9 (NationPress) A team from the Gurugram Police specializing in cybercrime has taken a suspect into custody for allegedly defrauding a man of Rs 5 lakh by pretending to be a representative of a matrimonial platform, according to police reports.

The suspect has been identified as Jafir Ansari, who hails from Jharkhand. He was apprehended on Saturday in Chennai.

As per police statements, a complaint was filed indicating that on December 2, a sum of Rs 1,988 was automatically withdrawn from the victim's bank account.

The following day, the victim disabled the auto-pay feature on Shadi.com and sought the customer service number of the matrimonial site via Google.

Upon finding a number online, he reached out for assistance; shortly after, he received a call from an individual claiming to offer help. This individual then contacted the victim through a WhatsApp call, citing a network problem and requesting further personal information.

"The victim became wary of the caller, but by the time he reached out to his bank's customer service to secure his account, he had already lost Rs 5 lakh, which was withdrawn from his bank account," stated Inspector Naveen Kumar, the station house officer (SHO) of the Cyber Crime (South) police station.

During the police investigation, it was revealed that the suspect and his accomplices had posed as customer service representatives for shaadi.com. Whenever someone searched for the customer service number of shaadi.com, their number would show up in the search results.

They would then be alerted to the search and either call the individual directly or have the suspect make contact, convincing the person to click on a link disguised as help. By sharing their screen, they obtained sensitive bank account information and executed the fraud.

The authorities have confiscated 14 mobile phones, 8 Aadhaar cards, 6 ATM/credit cards, and 1 PAN card used in the fraudulent activities from the suspect's possession.
