Gurugram, April 11 (NationPress) The local administration is intensifying its efforts to mitigate waterlogging challenges in Gurugram city during the upcoming monsoon season, as stated by an official.
The official noted that to guarantee effectiveness, Haryana Industries and Commerce Minister Rao Narbir Singh convened a meeting with relevant department officers to assess preparation strategies.
During this meeting, the minister evaluated the status of cleaning operations for stormwater drains and internal sewer systems across various wards, the performance of sewage treatment plants (STPs), and the sanitary arrangements in different zones.
He directed officials to ensure thorough cleaning of all drains and sewer lines before June 15 to prevent public inconveniences.
The minister emphasized that any negligence in cleaning operations will not be accepted, and severe action will be taken against accountable officers.
“The names of officers responsible for areas prone to waterlogging must be shared with local RWAs and councillors for direct communication in emergencies,” the minister stated.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to providing residents with a clean, waterlogging-free environment. He also expressed dissatisfaction with the corporation's engineering wing, insisting that all manhole covers be correctly positioned for optimal drainage.
Improperly leveled sewer lids prevent adequate drainage during rains, leading to significant waterlogging and road damage.
The minister also stressed that corruption would not be tolerated and requested a comprehensive report detailing expenditure on stormwater drain cleaning by the Municipal Corporation since 2014.
Payments to contractors should only occur after obtaining written consent from the RWA of the affected area.
Despite several claimed preparations by the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG), Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), and other agencies to address waterlogging issues, a three-hour rain on May 2 revealed inadequacies in the administration's preparations.
Heavy waterlogging occurred on numerous roads and areas after only a few hours of rain, disrupting both vehicle traffic and pedestrian movement, causing significant difficulties for commuters.
