Chandigarh, Sep 1 (NationPress) As a response to the alarming forecast of heavy rainfall, Haryana's Chief Secretary, Anurag Rastogi, has instructed all field officers to stay at their respective headquarters and exercise rigorous vigilance until September 5.
A communication sent to all Divisional Commissioners, Range Inspector Generals of Police (IGPs), Deputy Commissioners, Superintendents of Police, and Sub-Divisional Magistrates emphasized that the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of substantial rainfall across the state in the upcoming days, raising concerns about potential local flooding.
“Consequently, during this timeframe, no officer shall be permitted to take leave without the express consent of the Chief Secretary or the Additional Chief Secretary of the Home Department,” stated an official announcement quoting the Chief Secretary.
In light of the recent flooding situation in Ambala, State Transport Minister Anil Vij remarked that prompt and efficient actions by the administration were critical in keeping the city secure. “Only a limited number of homes, situated within the embankment zone, experienced issues. Families affected were relocated to safer locations with provisions made for food and shelter. The SDRF was also mobilized, ensuring ongoing monitoring,” he disclosed to the media in Ambala.
Vij emphasized that during his tenure, an eight-kilometer embankment was constructed alongside the Tangri River, which effectively shielded Ambala from severe flooding. “This year, the river's flow peaked at 38,000 cusecs, surpassing the prior high of 35,000 cusecs, yet the city remained unharmed.” He mentioned that deepening the Tangri River had been authorized and that work had commenced, albeit delays caused by political interference.
“Excavation efforts will resume post-monsoon, and I am optimistic that upon completion, Ambala will be fortified against floods,” he asserted. Vij also pointed out that Maheshnagar and Babyal drains have been reinforced, and cutting-edge pumps with a capacity of 200 cusecs each were installed in Babyal and Ghaseetpur regions.
In addressing the challenges posed by the persistent rainfall, Vij stated that the Chief Minister has canceled his overseas trip and suspended all official leaves. “No officer or employee is allowed to leave headquarters, and relief supplies are being distributed wherever necessary,” he added.
