Chennai, Oct 4 (NationPress) The Regional Meteorological Centre has issued a warning for heavy rainfall affecting 14 districts in Tamil Nadu on Saturday, as weather patterns over the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea gain strength.
The latest report indicates a deep depression that has been present over the central and adjacent northwest Bay of Bengal since October 2 has now moved northwest, making landfall near Gopalpur on the southern coast of Odisha by evening.
Another deep depression situated over the Saurashtra coast and surrounding areas further intensified on October 1, transitioned into the northeast Arabian Sea by October 2, and is currently located approximately 240 km west-southwest of Dwarka, Gujarat.
This system is projected to evolve into a cyclonic storm within the next three hours and may head westward before gradually weakening over the upcoming 24 hours.
As a result of these weather anomalies, numerous regions in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal are anticipated to experience light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning today.
Isolated heavy downpours are expected in the districts of Tiruvallur, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Ariyalur, Salem, Namakkal, Kallakurichi, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, and Thanjavur, along with areas in Puducherry and Karaikal.
On Saturday, heavy rain is also likely in certain pockets of Tiruvallur, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Villupuram, Ranipet, Vellore, Tirupattur, Tiruvannamalai, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, and Ramanathapuram.
The department forecasts no significant change in maximum temperatures throughout the state, although a slight reduction may occur in some regions.
In certain interior districts, maximum temperatures could remain 2-3 degrees Celsius above normal. For Chennai and surrounding areas, the sky is expected to be generally cloudy with moderate rain and thunderstorms likely in various parts of the city.
Intermittent heavy showers may also take place. Daytime temperatures are projected to hover around 32-33 degrees Celsius, with nighttime temperatures ranging from 24-25 degrees Celsius.
Strong winds are predicted over coastal areas, with speeds varying from 60 to 80 km/h, possibly gusting up to 90 km/h in some locales.
Fishermen are strongly urged to refrain from venturing into the sea in affected areas due to the high winds and tumultuous sea conditions. Authorities have advised residents in low-lying and flood-prone zones to remain vigilant and heed official warnings.
